IMGP1715.JPG

The label remnant on the stretcher identifies this work as an exhibition painting. It remains in its original gilded frame. The subject seems Pre-Rahaelite inspired, with something of the Burne-Jones influence. The figure perhaps draws on romanticised Greco-Roman iconography.
The figure represents fertility, creation and plenty, and captures the mood of late Victorian British establishment, with its accomplishments, wealth and self-confidence across its empire, at its height.
