Ebony casket bound in white metal and gilt brass strapwork

IMGP1170.JPG

Ebony casket, bound with fine quality white metal (silver?) and polished brass strapwork. Either French or Russian in origin. The interior is deep red cushioned and gathered satin. The feet are adjustable in height by turning them, so as to allow the casket to sit squarely on any surface, uneven or not. It dates from somewhere between 1890 and 1910. There are a total of 55 richly coloured glass cabochons, each backed by a mirrored surface, so they throw out light. Very beautiful.
